An intriguing exhibition of Joan Margaret Ryan’s marbling art, taking an under-appreciated and over simplified medium to a new level.
When [marbling] is seen at all, it is usually the product of a sterile mechanical process, cheaply produced and devoid of feeling, for use in books sold in chain stores as objects d’art… Here, in these takes of Ryan’s, marbling is freed from all market-minded concepts.

About the Artist: Joan M. Ryan was born in Victoria in 1950 and studied art with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the University of Victoria, as well as in France and England. She worked in UVi’c Special Collections starting 1975.
