Larger than Life: Underwater Photography

August 27 – September 27, 2002

Legacy Maltwood (at Mearns Centre – McPherson Library)

An exhibit of photography of Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands by UVic alumnus Mike Wetklo. This series reveals the brilliant colours of Westcoast marine life. Larger Than Life examines many of the small marine life creature and presents them on a larger scale, so that they may be fully appreciated.

About the Artist:

Mike Wetklo was born in Victoria and studied biology at the University of Victoria. He later developed a love of diving and has had the opportunity to dive all over Vancouver Island and around the Queen Charlotte Islands. He uses a macro lens in the majority of his work. This technique allows him to capture every fine detail of the subject. It also provides the opportunity to see directly into the eye of the subject, whether it be a giant Pacific Octopus, or a peanut-sized hermit crab.
