This exhibition explores the artistic visions and words, both spoken and written, of three of Victoria’s best-known artists of the 20th century: Emily Carr, Katharine Maltwood, and Myfanwy Pavelic. While their artistic expression led them along different trajectories each as a painter, sculptor and portraitist, they also crossed paths in a number of instances as supporters of one another’s artistic pursuits, in their shared search for iconic imagery from the point of view of artists on the West Coast of Canada and in their exploration of both modern and traditional means of expression.

The Lion and the Fox – Catalogue

The Lion and the Fox exhibition showcases the Lewis side of the C.J. Fox Collection. It is not only representative of the largest and perhaps most significant portion of the whole assemblage, being the foundation upon which the remaining collection was built, it also features the striking visual art of Lewis and others, making it particularly suitable for exhibition purposes.

The University of Victoria Libraries, the Friends of UVic Libraries and the Maltwood Art Museum & Gallery are pleased to present an exhibition of the C. J. Fox Collection of Wyndham Lewis art and literary works. The public showing celebrates former Reuters/Canadian Press journalist and Modernist scholar Cyril Fox’s donation of his extensive English Modernism collection to the University of Victoria. The Lion and the Fox comprises two exhibits; the McPherson Gallery exhibit of art works by Wyndham Lewis and others, and a display of Wyndham Lewis books and materials from the Cyril James Fox fonds, held in the Archives and Special Collections Reading Room (A005).

Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery

A photographic exhibition of Quebec Authors by Ludovic Fremaux. The exhibit contains 40 photographic portraits of Quebec writers including Maillet, LaFerrire, Archambault, Meigs and others. Fremaux photographed the writers in the backdrops of their ordinary lives. They were collected in a book in April 1998, and have also been used by several publishing houses in Quebec and abroad. The photographs are accompanied by an excerpt from the author’s work, as well as a short biographic and bibliographic note.

Honour the Women: Portraits by Manon Elder

Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery

Features portraits of outstanding B.C. women by Oak Bay artist Manon Elder. Coincides with International Women’s Week, March 5 to 11. The woman were chosen four years prior to the opening of the show and were painted in their homes or workspaces to get a sense of their individuality.

The shortlisted women are: Nelly Auersperg, doctor and medical researcher; Jeannette Armstrong, writer; Rosemary Brown, human rights advocate; Rose Charlie, lawyer; Shush Datt, television producer; (the late) Dorothy Lam, philanthropist; Silken Laumann, Olympic rowing medalist; Ann Mortify, singer; Wendy McDonald, businesswoman; and P.K. Page, poet and artist.
