Sea and Swirl: Works by Sandra Wiles

This was an exhibition in conjunction with Community Week and the University of Victoria’s 100th anniversary. This exhibition featured acrylic paintings and studies by Sanda Wiles, a UVic Alumna.

Nature shows a quiet but powerful play between perfection and irregularities… My work plays with this tension, this syncopation between the anticipated and the unexpected.

This was an exhibit of watercolour paintings with a focussed colour palette by retired University of Victoria faculty member, Walter Riedel.

Riedel has been a professor of Germanic Studies at Victoria College and the University of Victoria since 1982. Though Riedel is inspired by local land and seascapes, he describes his work as “somewhat experimental.”

Poetic Science in the Information Age

This was an installation exhibit by University of Victoria graduate student, Laura De Decker.

I challenge both the concept and conceived limitations of various media. The media that i work with include colour, data, computer technology, language, systems, and methods. At times what seems to be two distinct media merge into one or vice versa.

Exhibition of UVic Visual Arts alumni. Thirty years’ worth of Visual Arts BFA graduates have been invited to participate in this exhibit, the first of its kind at UVic. Over sixty artists’ pieces will be included in the exhibit. The works chosen will reflect the diversity of the artists’ interests and artistic explorations in painting, drawing, sculpture and other mixed media work.

The Art of Music brings together a selection of items from the University’s extensive art collection, some 14,000 objects representing the decorative and fine arts world-wide. Art and music probably first came together in the decoration of musical instruments themselves and in the regalia used in performances with musical accompaniment.

An exhibit of artwork by UVic Alumna and artist Pilar Mehlis. The exhibit features paintings of characters that influenced the artists life in both positive and negative ways. Through her art, she creates the atmosphere of an unfinished story so that the spectator can arrive at their own conclusions.

About the Artist:

Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Pilar Mehlis moved to Canada and graduated with a double major in Visual Arts and Art History in 1999. She is an award wining painter, and has had a number of solo exhibitions.

An exhibit that forms part of the University’s week-long Millennium Festival, April 1 to 7, celebrating the outstanding achievements of University of Victoria honorands such as Michael Snow, Pat Martin Bates, Ed Harris, Myfanwy Spencer Pavelic, Susan Point, Henry Hunt and Ted Harrison.

This exhibition is about more than just artwork, it is a tribute to the lifelong pursuit of excellence and those individuals who embody that pursuit: the honourary Degree recipients of the University of Victoria.

The artists included Don Bergland, Robert Dalton, Walter Dexter, Helen Smith, Kathy Collis, Bill Zuk, and Gillian Davidson. They explored the social issues surrounding technology and the environment.
