Salish Geese

In 2014 Sheilia Austin was the Visiting Artist for ANTH 305: Anthropology of the Arts. Sheilia taught students the fundamental techniques of Salish weaving on individual small looms, and they learned about dyeing wool with plants and spinning the wool on a traditional Salish spinning machine. Using Sheilia’s work as examples, students learned about the traditional designs woven into garments and blankets. The design for her commissioned work represents geese in flight.
