This exhibition has provided me the rewarding opportunity to bring to life the work of Glenn Howarth by telling a story through his art and ephemera. Through my immersion in his extensive records held in UVic Special Collections, I discovered the significant impact he had on the art scene of Victoria starting in the 1970s. I learned of his obsession with the science of visual perception through his writings, and examined how that shaped his artistic oeuvre.

Researching an artist with so many ties to Victoria allowed me to conduct interviews with Howarth’s former students and colleagues. The project greatly benefited from this aspect, and I gained a greater understanding of his dedication to teaching and mentoring. Similarly, the access to primary source material deepened my understanding of the intellectual and theoretical explorations underlying his artistic practice.
