Tondo, a tradition of painting circular canvases, is a format used famously in the Renaissance, but the practice dates back to Greek antiquity. The use of a circular canvas alters the perspective of the traditional square or rectangular composition, changing the focal points, and often raising the horizon line. The effect is a work of art that appears to extend beyond the boundaries of its frame, as if only a portion of the whole has been captured.
