Canadian 1931-2015
Throughout the 1960s, Walter Dexter produced a body of work that championed the place of ceramics in contemporary Canadian art. He received a diploma in Ceramics in Alberta before studying in Sweden. While abroad his attitude towards ceramics as a fine art form was heightened. Upon his return to Canada in the late 1950s, Dexter began combining his skills as a painter and potter to create unusually colourful and texturized work. It was after his move to Victoria in the early seventies that he mastered the ancient Japanese style raku, thus introducing the process to Canada. Dexter became known as a member of the Limners and as a highly regarded teacher.
