Canadian 1920-1985

John Dobereiner helped launch a separate Department of Visual Arts at the University of Victoria in 1968. It grew out of the Education department and became part of the new Faculty of Fine Arts in 1969. Dobereiner attended the Vancouver School of Art and the University of British Columbia before completing a Master of Arts degree at the University of Washington. He is best known for his uniquely three dimensional shaped canvases that play with the illusion of perspective. His lesser known painterly and gestural abstract artworks contrast with the hard geometric lines and colour planes of his optical art.
