Joseph Egoyan became fascinated with the forms of birds and the juxtaposition that existed between birds in life and birds in death. He began his artistic practice early with his first exhibition at sixteen years of age. After spending some time studying in the United States, Egoyan moved to Cairo where he met his future wife, Shushan, also an accomplished artist. The early 1960s marked a new chapter for the couple when they immigrated to Canada and settled in Victoria, where they ran a furniture and design business and raised their family including son, film director Atom Egoyan and daughter, concert pianist Eve Egoyan.
