
Margaret August is a Coast Salish, two-spirit artist from Shíshálh First Nation. Margaret identifies with the pronoun they, them, their. They were born in 1983 in the traditional unceded Lkwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories. They believe, the many gifts of each Two-Spirited person is unique to the individual and rooted in where they come from.
Margaret originally began developing their artistic talents at an early age by initially exploring music, writing and performance art. They carried on with their visual art practice as they became an adult.
In 2017-Present, Margaret started mentoring with fellow Coast Salish artist, Dylan Thomas. Working under the guidance and support of Dylan, has deepened the learning in their traditional ways of creating art. Margaret began their journey with Dylan, by first learning how to draw in the Salish design elements, followed by learning fine painting skills, and then design specifics for different mediums such as glass, bentwood boxes, paddles, sandblasted wood panels.
Margaret shares in similar to their Coast Salish ancestors the desire to continuously broaden their art practice and, to pass on the cultural knowledge and skills to a future generation of Salish artists.
