The human in the canoe can be understood to be either a man or a woman. That person is giving thanks to the land, the sea, and sky, for all it is providing the people. Their hands are raised in a gesture of gratitude. The canoe in which they are travelling has an inflight swan on the side. This swan represents the good intentions of the people. The land provides for all peoples, and they are represented by the colours on the mountain: red, white, yellow, and black.

Orca Rising to the Surface
2016
Serigraph on Mylar and silk + Acrylic on paper
On loan from the artist

Orcas are monarchs; queens or kings of the sea. The super mammal in this print is surfacing. When orcas surface, we as humans have a small window of opportunity to see these magnificent beings, to appreciate their power and grace. As Salish people we have always respected the orca whales for the relationships they maintain with each other as they live out their lives in families, much like humans. Orcas have territories they hunt and live within. But like humans, they too, are predators.
