Colin Browne is professor in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University where he teaches production, screenwriting, critical writing and courses in Canadian and documentary cinema.

He has made films for the National Film Board of Canada, is co-founder of the Praxis Centre for Screenwriters and is active in the preservation and conservation of archival film. He serves on the boards of B.C. Film, the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Kootenay School of Writing and The Capilano Review.

Browne met Karl Spreitz while working at the Provincial Museum in Victoria in the early 1970s.  He has collaborated with Spreitz on a series of films for the Provincial Museum including the Point Ellice Bridge Disaster. They worked on twelve films together in Victoria and Vancouver including Browne’s first film Strathyr  and White Lake (1989), which was nominated at the Genie Awards for Best Feature Length Documentary.
