Passage (2020)

Caribou hide, x-ray film, photo transfer, steel grommets, chain, clips, sinew

The elders represented in Passage—Shepard Felix, Ralph Kimiksana, Sara Mangelana, Emma Feichtinger—are part of a group known as The Tuktoyaktuk Drummers and Dancers. They are some of Tuktoyaktuk’s last fluent Inuvialuktun speakers. The translucent images, which show them dancing in celebration to the rhythm of traditional drums that are always made with skin from a female caribou belly, are superimposed over x-rays of community members. They are framed here by the warmth and softness of caribou, an animal that sustained them physically and spiritually throughout their lives.
